Speak Out
Student Photo-Documentary Project
Good Schools Pennsylvania and the Education Law Center have partnered with Critical Exposure to facilitate students in a photography project, to document the impact of underfunding on public schools.
A picture tells a thousand words
Students in the Philadelphia School District and Sto-Rox School District in Western Pennsylvania used photography to document the impact of funding inequities on their public schools. As part of the project, students received training about photography and funding for public schools, a camera and film, guidance about taking photographs that would tell their story, research and information about the quality and funding of their schools, opportunities to participate in advocacy efforts, and the opportunity to hold a photography exhibit in their community.
The student photos depict both positive examples of high-quality public education opportunities for learning, good teachers, and modern facilities, as well as poor conditions overcrowding, inadequate resources, unsafe environments. They serve as yet another call to our lawmakers that it's time to fix the state finance system for public education.
